At 83 years old, Vera Sandwall has lived a life full of love, service, and resilience. A retired nurse, mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother, she embodies the spirit of care and compassion she once provided to others. Now, as she navigates her own hospice journey, Vera remains a shining example of strength and gratitude. This summer, a celebration of Vera’s life was held. She was surrounded by friends, family,
and caregivers who have provided support to her throughout the years. Her joy radiated as she shared stories and laughter with loved ones who traveled from near and far to honor her. Meatball subs, macaroni salad, and a delicious cake filled the day with warmth — much like the care Vera has received from her hospice team.
Vera’s connection with hospice began years ago when her husband, James, needed end-of-life care. Reflecting on that time, she recalls how she initially resisted making the call. “I didn’t want to admit it was time,” she says. “But when I finally did, I was so relieved. The help, the support, and the kindness—it all came together. I don’t know why anyone would hesitate to call hospice.” Now, as a hospice patient herself, Vera finds comfort in the peace of mind that hospice brings, praising the team for their unwavering support and compassion. “They’re here to help you, not to harm you. The peace of mind they offer is priceless,” she says.
What sets Vera’s story apart is her message of calling hospice earlier. Too often, families wait until the very last days, missing out on months of support that could have improved quality of life. Vera’s experience underscores a key message: hospice care isn’t just for the final days or weeks of life—it’s about living fully for as long as possible. Early hospice involvement provides time for the care team to help manage symptoms, reduce hospital visits, and enjoy meaningful moments with family and friends. “I feel more in control, and my family feels supported,” she adds.
Among her many goals, Vera was able to attend her granddaughter’s wedding this past August. Now, she looks forward to celebrating another Christmas with her family. With a knowing smile, she offers words of encouragement to others who may be hesitant to connect with hospice : “Don’t wait until the last minute. You’d be surprised how much peace of mind it can bring.” Her words remind us that hospice is about more than care—it’s about living life to the fullest, right until the very end.
Vera’s story is a powerful reminder of how hospice can transform not only the end of life but also the way families experience those final chapters. By embracing hospice care early, Vera has ensured that she can continue creating memories with her loved ones, living each day with the support and dignity she deserves.
